Working at Legal Aid Commission (ACT) is an opportunity to do challenging and rewarding work and make a meaningful contribution to the circumstances of disadvantaged and vulnerable clients and communities in the ACT.
About the Role
The Disability Justice Liaison Officer has been established to foster a shared approach to providing access to justice to people with disability. This is a funded position as part of the ACT Disability Justice Strategy. This role will support the development of a cross-system community of practice that will identify and address systemic barriers that impact access to justice for people with disability, supporting a cultural shift in justice agencies to better identify and meet the needs of people with disability.
You'll support the organisation to develop and implement training programs, adapt resources, identify and provide for reasonable adjustments, and undertake activities that enhance access to justice for people with disability.
Key responsibilities include:
- Driving systemic change, helping build a cross-agency community of practice, identifying barriers to justice for people with disability, and shaping policy and practice through data and shared learning
- Supporting people directly, helping clients navigate complex legal systems, connecting them to the right referrals, and working with staff to put reasonable adjustments in place
- Building capability across Legal Aid, delivering disability awareness training for staff and leading the translation of materials into Easy English and plain English
- Growing external partnerships, engaging with community members with disabilities, and building strong working relationships with NGOs, community organisations and government agencies
- Representing Legal Aid with professionalism, upholding the ACT Public Service Values in everything you do
About You
You bring genuine experience and insight working alongside people with disability, and you understand the barriers they can face in accessing justice, including for people navigating physical, intellectual and mental health challenges. You’re attuned to the compounding disadvantage that can affect people with disability, their families and communities, and you bring that understanding into everything you do.
You communicate clearly and confidently, in writing and in person, and you build effective working relationships with ease – with clients, colleagues and community partners alike. You use good judgement and initiative, staying calm and responsive when things get urgent, and you’re comfortable managing competing priorities with minimal supervision.
Just as importantly, you know how to look after yourself. This work asks a lot, and we’re looking for someone who can prioritise their own mental health and wellbeing alongside the people they support.
Lived experience of disability is highly regarded.
