Legal Aid is seeking full-time Legal Support Officers in the Criminal Practices for current and expected vacancies.

Working at Legal Aid Commission (ACT) is an opportunity to do challenging and rewarding work and make a meaningful contribution to the circumstances of disadvantaged and vulnerable clients and communities in the ACT.

The Criminal Legal Practice at Legal Aid ACT provides advice, assistance and representation to people in the ACT who are charged with criminal offences, including through duty lawyer services at the ACT Magistrates Court and Children’s Court. The practice provides ongoing assistance for substantive matters including defended hearings, trials and appeals in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and the High Court. The Criminal Practice plays an important role in supporting access to justice by assisting clients who may need one-off help at court or ongoing representation through a grant of legal assistance.

About the position:

The Legal Support Officer role provides administrative, procedural and client service support to lawyers in a busy Criminal Practice. The role requires strong organisational skills, attention to detail, sound communication, digital literacy and the ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining accuracy, confidentiality and professional service delivery.

About You:

You may come from an administration, customer service or office support background and be interested in using those skills in a legal environment. An interest in law or progress towards a legal degree would be advantageous. You will be organised, reliable and confident communicating with a range of people, with strong attention to detail, sound digital literacy, the ability to manage competing priorities and a respectful approach when working with clients from diverse backgrounds while building your understanding of law and the legal process.

If you are organised, detail-focused and motivated to support access to justice for disadvantaged and vulnerable people in the ACT, we encourage you to apply now.

Applications will be assessed as candidates apply; we encourage interested candidates to apply at their earliest convenience and include a current resume and a 1-page cover letter addressing the position requirements in the position description.

Applicants must have Australian work rights. Applicants need to hold or be eligible to hold an ACT WWVP registration. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a background check during the recruitment process, and an offer of employment is conditional on satisfactory results.

Legal Aid ACT is committed to workforce diversity and to creating an inclusive workplace. As part of this commitment, we welcome applications from all diversity groups. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability and people who identify as LGBTQIA+ are encouraged to apply.

These positions will be required to work at our office location, due to the in-person nature of our legal work.

Further information is available from the Position Description.

Applications close: 10am Friday 4th September 2026.
